Networking and using your networking partners to get referrals is one of the lowest cost lead generators available to cash-strapped start-up businesses. It’s worth spending time perfecting your networking skills. And the first rule of great networking is making a great first impression.

Have you ever heard the saying “you never get a second chance to make a first impression?”

You’ve probably already found that first impressions are essential to building relationships. But how can you guarantee leaving a lasting first impression?

The fact is there is no guarantee -- different people see things differently. There are, however, a few specific steps that can be taken to better your chances. Learn and practice them and they may forever change
your “first” impression.

Michelle T. Sterling, of the Global Image Group, says “within the first three seconds of a new encounter, you are evaluated… even if it is just a glance.”

So if nothing else, look presentable. Before words are even exchanged you will have been judged on your appearance and actions. Think of this as step zero.

The first step to leaving a lasting impression is in your greeting. Look the person in the eyes, shake with a firm grip and repeat their name. (This last helps you remember them later.) This is an easy and sure-fire way to a lasting first impression. Although this first step may sound obvious, it is frequently botched.

The second step is practice good listening. This may not come naturally to you so might have to practice. Make sure to ask at least one question – and make it a good one.

Third, show some interest. Ask what they do now? How did the come to do that. Or, perhaps my all time favorite question – What are you trying to accomplish? If it’s a social setting, as about the holidays. Or vacation. People enjoy hearing themselves, so help them out – ask questions. And don’t just pretend to be interested…be interested.

The final step to leaving a lasting impression is the valediction. Say something they will remember when they turn to walk away… “It was great meeting you…” “Hope to hear from you soon…” “I wish you the best of luck…” Make them feel as though you’ve enjoyed your time meeting with them. And most important of all, remember their name.

These four steps may not guarantee that you leave a lasting impression, they will certainly up your chances. Remember to be yourself, remember their name and be a good listener. The rest is in their hands.
